Topic: Real Estate in the United States

Real estate in the United states is something that anyone who plans on owning, renting, or selling a house should be familiar with. The housing market is truly fascinating to me. That is why I have chosen the real estate market to cover for my topic this semester. Real estate in the United States has made a strong come back in recent months but many uncertainties lie ahead. The government has implemented some eye opening stimulus tactics to spark a revival to the U.S housing market. Low mortgage rates and government bond buying have aided the recovery of the housing market. However, this brings forward some critical questions that will have to be faced when the government  stops its bond buying program and mortgage rates climb. This will bring adversity to this market that could essentially make this industry forever stronger, or less preferably, a mere disaster.

  1. Was there a personal experience that got you interested in real estate? I'm not too familiar with this topic. I've done work in the past and heard stories on foreclosure but I always wanted to know more about it. I'm excited to see how you move this along and see what kind of things I will learn from it.

  2. I look forward to hearing more about your take on real estate markets. Will you be covering the history of, or just current market trends? Also, will this be general real estate stuff, or will you dig deeper into the subject like regional differences, causes and effects of "neighborhoods going bad" and the legal intricacies of buying or selling property? Maybe you have some insight on how we can flip houses without using our own money? Which ever direction you go, I will be following along. My grandpa always told me "Son, don't buy houses, buy land". What is your take on that old southern philosophy?

  3. Patch, this is a strong point you are making. This is a time of uncertainty, and it's helpful to have someone like you to break down the facts for the rest of us.

It might be a good idea to talk a little more about your personal experiences/qualifications in this field. I can tell you know what you're talking about, but a little bit of credibility goes a long way.

  4. Your writing is concise Patch. This is good, but we also want sentences that are rich.

Real estate in the United states is something that anyone who plans on owning, renting, or selling a house should be familiar with.

This sentence can be rewritten in a more active voice…

“Anyone who plans to rent, own, or sell a home should be familiar with real estate.”

Now that the sentence is phrased better, it is too obvious.

However, this brings forward some critical questions that will have to be faced when the government stops its bond buying program and mortgage rates climb. This will bring adversity to this market that could essentially make this industry forever stronger, or less preferably, a mere disaster.

These two sentences say, essentially, that there are some critical questions that could make the industry forever stronger or a disaster. You don’t state the questions, and saying that they could cause either extreme within the industry is really saying nothing.

This is why we move onto arguments next Patch. You need to make some stronger points in your pieces.

The two bio assignments are about focus. While a biography often jumps around as much as our lives, the beat defense concentrates on what makes us credible for one subject. Usually, the defense is the better bio too.

In your case, your bio is okay, but it’s not really connected to your subject. Your beat defense is good, but it doesn’t really mention you.

I would try an About that discusses why real estate fascinates you and speaks to your credibility within it.

    Good work.
